An Historical Geography of Europe represents the first multi-authored comprehensive study on the subject. It provides the reader with an analytical and explanatory account of European historical geography from classical times to the modern period, including the vast changes to landscape, settlements, population, and in political and cultural structures and character that have taken place since 1500. The book takes account of the vast volume of relevant research and literature that hasbeen published over the past two or three decades, in order to achieve a unique coverage and synthesis of this very broad range of evidence and opinion, and has tried to engage with many of the main themes and debates to give a clear indication of changing ideas and interpretations of the subject. This book brings together British and European authors from a number of disciplines who have considerable distinction in the various fields of historical geography and related fields, includinga significant number who have already written on the wider problem of European historical geography. It is amply illustrated with maps and diagrams to present many of the issues in a visual form.

This book is the last of three and continues the Historical Geography of Europe down to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. The previous volume ended with a survey of Europe at the time when the Industrial Revolution began and railways were beginning to spread across the continent. This book picks up the main threads in the geography of Europe at this time and follows them into the twentieth century. First, changes in the political map are examined, because spatial variations in the role of government were becoming increasingly important. This is followed by a review of the physical resources of the continent and of their importance in the growth of manufacturing and the expansion of agricultural production.

Every age has its own geography, separate and distinct from the geographies of earlier and succeeding ages. This 1973 book seeks to examine the complex of natural and man-made features which have provided the background of history, influencing its course and themselves modified by human action. Professor Pounds examines five short periods, each of which is not only relatively well documented, but also important in the climax of a civilisation. In a sense, each represents the climax of a longer period of historical development. The aim is to survey the whole of Europe for each of the chosen periods, not merely those areas which have been highlighted by documents and events. Northern Europe in the age of Pericles and eastern Europe in all periods are, for example, examined, alongside the better-known Mediterranean region, France and the Rhineland. Considerable use is made of maps, all specially prepared for this book.

The central theme of this book is the changing spatial pattern of human activities during the last 2,500 years of Europe's history. Professor Pounds argues that three factors have determined the locations of human activities: the environment, the attitudes and forms of social organization of the many different peoples of Europe and lastly, the levels of technology. Within the broad framework of the interrelationships of environment, society and technology, several important themes pursued from the fifth century BC to the early twentieth century: settlement and agriculture, the growth of cities, the development of manufacturing and the role of trade. Underlying each of these themes are the discussions of political organization and population. Although the book is based in part of Professor Pound's magisterial three volumes An Historical Geography of Europe (1977, 1980, 1985), it was written especially for students and readers interested in a general survey of the subject.

This newly-revised edition of the Historical Atlas of Central Europe enhances its formidable scholarship by extending its reach from the early fifth century through the turbulent 1990s to end in the year 2000. The atlas encompasses the countries of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, and Greece. Also included are the eastern part of Germany (historic Mecklenburg, Brandenburg, Prussia, Saxony, and Lusatia), Bavaria, Austria, northeastern Italy (historic Venetia), the lands of historic Poland-Lithuania (present-day Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine up to the Dnieper River), Moldova and western Turkey. The atlas is basically chronological with eighty-nine full-colour maps and accompanying text. Numerous tables and lists provide related statistical and demographic material. Especially useful is the detailed index, which includes hundreds of variant place names. This revised edition includes twenty new maps and eleven new chapters, most of which deal with those countries that gained (or regained) their independence during the last decade. The Historical Atlas of Central Europe will be invaluable to scholars, diplomats, journalists, students, and general readers who wish to have a fuller understanding of this critical area, with its many peoples, languages, and continued political upheaval.
