The author's approach is one of continuum models of the aerodynamic flow interacting with a flexible structure whose behavior is governed by partial differential equations. Both linear and nonlinear models are considered although much of the book is concerned with the former while keeping the latter clearly in view. A complete chapter is also devoted to nonlinear theory. The author has provided new insights into the classical inviscid aerodynamics and raises novel and interesting questions on fundamental issues that have too often been neglected or forgotten in the development of the early history of the subject. The author contrasts his approach with discrete models for the unsteady aerodynamic flow and the finite element model for the structure. Much of the aeroelasticity has been developed with applications formerly in mind because of its enormous consequences for the safety of aircraft. Aeroelastic instabilities such as divergence and flutter and aeroelastic responses to gusts can pose a significant hazard to the aircraft and impact its performance. Yet, it is now recognized that there are many other physical phenomena that have similar characteristics ranging from flows around flexible tall buildings and long span bridges, alternate energy sources such as electric power generation by smart structures to flows internal to the human body. From the foreword: "For the theorist and applied mathematician who wishes an introduction to this fascinating subject as well as for the experienced aeroelastician who is open to new challenges and a fresh viewpoint, this book and its author have much to offer the reader." Geared toward advanced undergraduates and graduate students, this outstanding text was written by one of the founders of bioengineering and modern biomechanics. It offers unusually thorough coverage of the interaction of aerodynamic forces and elastic structures. It has also proven highly useful to designers and engineers concerned with flutter, structural dynamics, flight loads, and related subjects. An introductory chapter covers concepts of aerodynamics, elasticity, and mechanical vibrations. Chapters 2 through 11 survey aeroelastic problems, their historical background, basic physical concepts, and the principles of analysis. Chapters 12 through 15 contain the fundamentals of oscillating airfoil theory and a brief summary of experimental results. Each chapter is followed by a bibliography, and 147 illustrations and 20 tables illuminate the text.

Addressing algebraic problems found in biomathematics and energy, Free and Moving Boundaries: Analysis, Simulation and Control discusses moving boundary and boundary control in systems described by partial differential equations (PDEs). With contributions from international experts, the book emphasizes numerical and theoretical control of moving boundaries in fluid structure couple systems, arteries, shape stabilization level methods, family of moving geometries, and boundary control. Using numerical analysis, the contributors examine the problems of optimal control theory applied to PDEs arising from continuum mechanics. The book presents several applications to electromagnetic devices, flow, control, computing, images analysis, topological changes, and free boundaries. It specifically focuses on the topics of boundary variation and control, dynamical control of geometry, optimization, free boundary problems, stabilization of structures, controlling fluid-structure devices, electromagnetism 3D, and inverse problems arising in areas such as biomathematics. Free and Moving Boundaries: Analysis, Simulation and Control explains why the boundary control of physical systems can be viewed as a moving boundary control, empowering the future research of select algebraic areas.

Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads, SecondEdition is an updated new edition offering comprehensivecoverage of the main principles of aircraft aeroelasticity andloads. For ease of reference, the book is divided into three partsand begins by reviewing the underlying disciplines of vibrations, aerodynamics, loads and control, and then goes on to describesimplified models to illustrate aeroelastic behaviour and aircraftresponse and loads for the flexible aircraft before introducingsome more advanced methodologies. Finally, it explains howindustrial certification requirements for aeroelasticity and loadsmay be met and relates these to the earlier theoretical approachesused. Key features of this new edition include: Uses a unified simple aeroelastic model throughout thebook Major revisions to chapters on aeroelasticity Updates and reorganisation of chapters involving FiniteElements Some reorganisation of loads material Updates on certification requirements Accompanied by a website containing a solutions manual, andMATLAB® and SIMULINK® programs that relate to the modelsused For instructors who recommend this textbook, a series oflecture slides are also available Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads, SecondEdition is a must-have reference for researchers andpractitioners working in the aeroelasticity and loads fields, andis also an excellent textbook for senior undergraduate and graduatestudents in aerospace engineering.
