Advances in Applied Microbiology offers intensive reviews of the latest techniques and discoveries in this rapidly moving field. The editors are recognized experts and the format is comprehensive and instructive. PRAISE FOR THE SERIES "No laboratory scientist, field worker or technical administrator can afford to pass it up." --ASM NEWS "The topics are well supported by an extensive bibliography and provide a rich source of current information." --BIOPHARM
Volume 40 contains state-of-the-art, comprehensive reviews about applied microbiology, biotechnology, and microbial ecology, including a two-part review on "Challenges in Commercial Biotechnology" by Dr. Ales Prokopand a review on microbial cellulases.
Published since 1959, Advances in Applied Microbiology continues to be one of the most widely read and authoritative review sources in microbiology. The series contains comprehensive reviews of the most current research in applied microbiology. Recent areas covered include bacterial diversity in the human gut, protozoan grazing of freshwater biofilms, metals in yeast fermentation processes and the interpretation of host-pathogen dialogue through microarrays. Eclectic volumes are supplemented by thematic volumes on various topics, including Archaea and sick building syndrome. Impact factor for 2012: 4.974. Contributions from leading authorities Informs and updates on all the latest developments in the field
Bioremediation is a rapidly advancing field and the technology has been applied successfully to remediate many contaminated sites. The goal of every soil remediation method is to enhance the degradation, transformation, or detoxification of pollutants and to protect, maintain and sustain environmental quality. Advances in our understanding of the ecology of microbial communities capable of breaking down various pollutants and the molecular and biochemical mechanisms by which biodegradation occurs have helped us in developing practical soil bioremediation strategies. Chapters dealing with the application of biological methods to soil remediation are contributed from experts – authorities in the area of environmental science including microbiology and molecular biology – from academic institutions and industry.
In recent years, rapid technological advances and changes in agricultural management have taken place. These have yielded benefits to society but have also generated new and significant environmental problems. Novel questions and challenges relating to agricultural practice and soil microbial ecology, ecotoxicology, biotechnology, and bioremediation must be addressed. As a consequence, the fields of soil microbiology and biochemistry have been highlighted. This book provides a modern, authoritative, and comprehensive collection of methods for the study of soil microbiology and biochemistry. Classical and modern, aerobic and anerobic, laboratory and field-based methods are presented. Detailed techniques are given, but in addition the theoretical basis behind such methodology is described, so that the origins and principles of the techniques are clear to the reader. Particular emphasis has been placed on uniform, simple, and clear presentation of the different methods. With respect to bioremediation of soils, this work provides a unique bridge between general and applied soil microbiology and biochemistry, presenting an integrated discussion of concepts, theories, and methods. This book will be essential for all scientists and students actively involved in natural and environmental sciences and engineering, and for those working in industry, authorities, and consulting companies. * * Uniform and clear presentation of the different methods. * Bridges the gap between general and applied soil microbiology. * Maintains a balanced discussion of concepts, theories, and methods. * Essential reading for all scientists and students involved in natural and environmental sciences and anyone working in the industry.

This book offers the latest scientific research on applied microbiology presented at the IV International Conference on Environmental, Industrial and Applied Microbiology (BioMicroWorld2011) held in Spain in 2011. A wide-ranging set of topics including agriculture, environmental, food, industrial and medical microbiology makes this book interesting not only for microbiologists, but also for anyone who likes to keep up with cutting-edge research in microbiology and microbial biotechnology. Readers will find a major collection of knowledge, approaches, methods and discussions on the latest advances and challenges in applied microbiology in a compilation of 136 chapters written by active researchers in the field from around the world. The topics covered in this single volume include biodegradation of pollutants, water, soil and plant microorganisms, biosurfactants, antimicrobial natural products, antimicrobial susceptibility, antimicrobial resistance, human pathogens, food microorganisms, fermentation, biotechnologically relevant enzymes and proteins, microbial physiology, metabolism and gene expression mainly, although many other subjects are also discussed.
Over the last few decades, the rapid and vast development of advanced microbial bioresources and metagenomics techniques has completely transformed the field of microbial biotechnology. Our understanding of microbial diversity, evolutionary biology, and microbial interaction with their animal and plant hosts at molecular level has been revolutionized with an abundance of new research. This new volume, Advances in Microbial Biotechnology: Current Trends and Future Prospect, focuses on the application of microorganisms for several purposes: for plant protection and improvement, for environmental remediation purposes, and for the improvement of human health. Various applications of microorganisms are covered broadly and have been appropriately reflected in depth in different chapters. The book is divided into four major sections: applied microbiology in agriculture microbes in the environment microbes in human health microbes in nanotechnology The book provides insight into the diverse microorganisms that have been explored and exploited in the development of various applications for agricultural improvements. The book also looks at the application of microbes for the removal of pollutants and the recovery of metals and oils. Also discussed is the detection and exploitation of microorganisms in the diagnosis of human diseases, providing possible holistic approaches to health. This new volume will provide a wealth of information on new research on the application of microbial biotechnology today.
